About the artist:
Joyce Combs presents glowing, color infused abstract paintings that compel the viewer to be introspective... rather like taking a moment to reflect on large ideas. Similar to hearing a piece of music that makes you stop in your tracks, Joyce Combs' large canvases make use of color and texture to reflect the force of the natural world. Her work successfully shows the complexity of life in layers of time, aging and earthly beauty. Thus, she likes to weather the surfaces of the pieces she paints by layering on oils with different consistencies, always with an eye to the power of color to evoke perceptions of inspiration.
Ms. Combs was born in Southwestern Oklahoma. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Oklahoma State University, then later studied at the Glassel Museum School, the academic wing of the Museum of Fine Arts of Houston, Texas. She began painting and producing monoprints in the mid-eighties, and several production companies contracted with her to sell prints to corporate clients and decorators all over the country. Her distinctive style has been a mark of her success at staying true to her talent and passion.
Over four centuries have passed since the golden age of the Renaissance. Leonardo de Vinci, Michaelangelo, Raphael, and other great painters of the era developed the style that Joyce Combs has studied and incorporated into her latest works, providing a touch of the Renaissance. Ms. Combs understands how to infuse contemporary creative pieces with these elements and the result is unique to her body of work.
Galleries in San Antonio, Houston, Austin, Santa Fe, and Fredericksburg carry her work. Joyce Combs has an international reputation, in addition to her acclaim here in the United States. She now lives in Fredericksburg, Texas.
